BRADFORD MIDDLETON – 2 POEMS

WHEN THE VIRUS CAME & STOLE MY WORDS

The dreaded virus came & went but

It hit hard for a few days when it was

Even a struggle to make it off my

Couch to my damn sofa but those days

Are now firmly behind me but still

Something lurks as if this lethargy may

Well hang around a while, keeping

Me down and unable to do just what

I want to do but hey I just got to rest up

Work on these words and keep on

Keeping on as I remember just how

These blessed words come to sprinkle

Their delight in my otherwise broken

Down life.

A LIFE OF MUSIC REMINDS ME…

With lockdown came isolation & it wasn’t until

Recently I realised what a blessed life I’ve so

Far enjoyed as on Saturday night, yes you’ve

Guessed it I was sat on my stool in my bar, and

It almost felt back to normal until some good

Tunes came on.

‘Pavement? Hmm, interesting’ I pondered as

The range life played out to be followed by

100% proof sonic youth and I thought, fuck,

What the hells going on. The pixies soon

Follow with their gigantic obsessions but when

Daniel johnston and then the Replacements

Came to ease my mind into letting go I finally

Asked, “whose music is this?”

“Mine,” a young guy behind the bar said &

All I could ask, “Really, what freaking year

Were you even born in?”

“1998” he responds and I order a large bourbon

Thinking “fuck me I saw all his favourite

Bands before he was even born!”
