Soldiering through an internal war ~ Bob McNeil

Soldiering through an internal war

Helpless in a hospital,

While laid out like a cadaver,

My thoughts are mercurial.

Petitioning for health is my endeavor.

Although zeroed on my pain,

I look at the TV news,

Feeling levels of disdain

And guilt for writing the blues.

Some people in war-torn lands remain strong.

Undaunted, they’re not on their knees.

I want the mettle of that throng

Who neither whine nor beg nor plea.

  1. Instead of giving up in the face of adversity, Bob McNeil uses his words with which to write through it. His piece shines through, much like his operation, which he miraculously got through. More than just this piece, which is a marvel to behold. I’m even more thankful that Bob survived his operation, as his presence here (in addition to the literary world) is very much wanted by his family, friends, and innumerable adoring fans is truly cherished, more than any words than I could ever sculpt in his honour. God bless you, Mr. McNeil, there’s nothing that can hold you back, not even cancer.

  2. A realistic and beautiful poem that is truly fitting for a creative warrior who consistently uses his passion and gift of writing to heal himself and others. Throughout his various challenges Bob McNeil uses his unique power of the words to empower himself and others as he displays great strength and determination. A true soldier who is true to himself, his art and the world. Bob McNeil teaches us that it is our passion guided by empathy and compassion that leads us to internal and external healing as we continue our quest and mission towards a loving sense of peace.

  3. This is an inspired piece. I really like how in the midst of pain and despair the poet longs for the strength and courage of those in foreign lands he sees on his television. It is simultaneously frank and brilliant. — J L Lewis

  4. A beautiful expression of trying to find the strength within yourself to remain strong and hopeful in the face of adversity and despair.

With time, this too shall pass. However, must all understand this, believe this, and keeping thinking and looking forward to get ourselves through.

Also, no matter how bad we think our situation is, we can perhaps seek solace and strength knowing that somewhere in the world, people have it worse off than you, yet there is a still a smile on their face and gratitude in their heart.

    Channel That! No matter what!
