illustration and poem by BOB MCNEIL

The Last will be First
“Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.” ― Aristotle

Cold weather is something poor folks
Really wish would pass
Because their clothes resemble shredded leaves,
And that frigid air can cut an ass.

Affluence, vacationing from discomfort,
Floats in a champagne bubble.
Intoxicated by plutocratic grandeur,
The moneyed avoid sobering trouble.

The indigent dream of kinder times
When their hands won’t serve as a begging cup
And the world won’t treat charity
Like spoiled milk that no one will sup.

Affluence is an invitation
To an exclusive resort
Lodging A-list celebrities
That hang around and cavort.

Needing food and shelter,
The indigent sift through garbage.
Such hardship serves as an incentive
For revolution and carnage.

  1. I’ve always enjoyed both the honesty and integrity of everything Bob McNeil has created, be it the written word or his illustrations. This piece and the accompanying artwork is an excellent example of that, and I’m truly grateful that he’s shared this. Kudos Bob for yet another, in a long list, of incredible works.

  2. Very clear and vivid description of true realities that are often seen but not spoken and need to be heard. Beautiful depiction of hidden truths spoken though the eyes, heart and spirit of a true artist !! ❤
