5 POEMS ~ DIANE WEBSTER

FEATHER LIGHT

A feather lies
light
on its reflection
on the pond;
conjoined twins
floating
in unison.

~

ROYAL FOREST

On forest meadow
autumn leaves
fallen
like royal subjects
bowing
before king
and queen.

~

DESCENDING VERTIGO

Fog and pond
consume
descending
fence posts
in a silent
flood
of gray
vertigo.

~

CLOVER RHYTHM

Patrons at a concert —
clover heads bob
in rhythm with the music
vibrating from the radio
until the song ends…
They continue
in mute appreciation
of the internal beat
still pulsing through
chlorophyll veins.

~

SPINDLY TWIG

The twig clings between
two telephone lines
like laundry hung outside
ripped into shreds by the wind
playful as a cat killing a mouse.
Like a dove flown
without its legs left
clamped around the line
awaiting reattachment –
Like a twig insecure
from its parent tree…
dreading wind to initiate
gravity plunging a stick
to the old lady’s sidewalk
where it snags, rubs
against spindly footsteps.
