Tango
Insects chirp in the yard and buzz
Til Carol slides open the patio door
Releasing a tango on the Magnavox.
Sipping a cocktail he approaches her,
Begs a dance “with my sweetest.”
“Oh, this is just like Spain,” and laughs.
Carol is so lithe in his arms as she turns
And spins along the cement patio,
keeping pace with his long strides.
She laughs. He is doing the rose
in the mouth gag—he twirls her again.
The tango lifts her up, his hand
On her back, into the sky, alive!
She will dance forever out here
On the patio, a tango in the night.
The music on the Magnavox
Slows to its end, setting her down
To her G&T and her loneliness.
